hellcat

leave it to me,
to bring home a perfectly sweet cat,
and turn him into hellcat.

attacking our legs,
arms, hands, hair.

scratching our couches,
floors, blankets, walls.

climbing the screen door.

now there is a great debate
in our house whether
he should stay inside,
and have his claws removed,
or become an outside cat,
and roam the free world.

i'm having those chest pains again.
thoughts? advice? help!?!

love at first sight

the moment i stepped out of my car
at my maw-maw's house in wv,
it was love at first sight.
"he's a stray," she said, "take him with you."
the sweetest cat i have met in a long time.
and it has been a long time.
we were ready for a new kitty.
so i brought you home with me.
four hours in the car together.
we bonded.

we named you huggy bear.
you also answer to bear, hb, huggins, and buddy.
the kids are in love with you too.
we hope you feel the same way.
like winning the kitty lottery?

welcome kitty buddy,
to our crazy life.
we think you will fit in just fine.

kitty buddy

we are nursing a sick kitty.
he is thirteen.
he is 15.5 pounds of bubba.
he has cancer.
the vet cannot do surgery.

so we are giving him whatever he wants.

and he is enjoying it.

almost thirteen years ago we rescued him from a shelter here in pittsburgh. we named him molson. to compliment zima, of course! *side note* - now that we have kids, they write endless stories about them at school. awesome.

he was a lanky and cuddly kitten. he is still a cuddler, but now a fluffy, giant cat. what a sweetheart.

i always knew that my pets would get older. i just didn't realize that i would be the "grown-up" taking care of the older pets. making the "grown-up" pet decisions. it is no fun. i think i liked it better when i just came home from school one day and everything was taken care of.

poor kitty buddy.

turn, turn, turn

our beloved zima passed away yesterday.

my neighbor offered to watch the kids while i took her to the vet. the doctor was so nice, i felt really grateful that he knew just what to say. then i brought her home to let molson say goodbye.

we had decided to just tell the kids that she went to heaven. and leave it at that. however, she looked so peaceful and fluffy and beautiful, we changed our minds and let them have one last goodbye. we wrapped her in my favorite sabres t-shirt (the one with the holes from being washed so many times) and mm dug a hole in our flower bed. we said our goodbyes and the kids put many dandelions on the spot. they cried a lot more than i thought they would, which was not fun.

i did remarkably well for someone who doesn't like to make grown-up decisions or deal with grown-up issues. don't get me wrong, i cried my eyes out, but by the time i picked up the kids i was better.

ssh - don't tell - i think i caught mm a little misty-eyed himself.

zima was with us for almost 13 years, a first anniversary present, and while lately i've been excited to get some "new things" - towels, sheets, dishes, etc. she was one "thing" i really didn't want to ever have to let go. it's strange, i would describe myself as someone who welcomes change, but now i am not so sure...

on a lighter note, my resilient kids are already asking for a kitten...
