on my mind

you tell on yourself by the friends you seek,
by the very manner in which you speak,
by the way you employ your leisure time,
by the use you make of dollar and dime.

you tell what you are by the things you wear,
by the spirit in which you your burdens bear,
by the kind of things at which you laugh,
by the records you play on the phonograph.

you tell what you are by the way you walk,
by the things of which you delight to talk,
by the manner in which you bear defeat,
by so simple a thing as how you eat.

by the books you choose from the well-filled shelf:
in these ways and more, you tell on yourself.
~jamie sidwell~

have a great weekend!
btw - i listened to cher, kiss, and captain & tennille.
(on my phonograph)
how about you?

precious gems

precious gems

a few weeks ago, we finally got around to trying gem jars at our house.  i first ripped out the article here - filed it away and forgot about it.  then the traveling circus started hers up, and i got inspired to put some jars into action.

by pure coincidence, these cups hold 100 gems.  filling up a cup will net you $10.  so that makes each gem worth 10 cents.  the kids can earn up to 5 gems a day.  one for making up their bed, one for clearing dishes from the table, one for keeping shoes in closet, one for hanging up their coat, and one for putting dirty clothes in the laundry hamper.

it doesn't sound like much, but it really is a big help to me.  the first few days i mindlessly picked up the clothes anyway, and the kids got all upset.  or i would automatically pick up the dishes, or the shoes, coats, etc.  i had to force myself to NOT pick up.  weird.

they have only lost a few gems for fighting or not listening.  usually the threat of "i'm taking a gem" is enough.  at some point i expect them to realize that getting into trouble only costs 10 cents, and in some cases might be totally worth it.  in fact, i'll be a little disappointed if they don't.  by that time i hope these chores will be habits and we won't have to worry so much about the gems.  now we just have to come up with $10s!

all in all, this is working in our house.
the kids have already cashed in for $10,
and are working on their second $10.
they wasted it all away on junk from five below.
surprise, not.

the other day we gave them each 5 gems
to clean up the playroom.
it was done in record time.
bribery?  maybe.  but it worked.

and k, the youngest, is by far the best at this system.
she reminds everyone else.

what works in your house?

friday not so funny

i started packing.
for the kids.
3 swimsuits,
3 sweatshirts,
3 pajamas,
etc.

all in neat little rows.

when i walked by a few hours later,
the clothes were gone.

"where are all the clothes i put here?"

"i put them away."

"you put them away?"

"yes, i saw clean laundry, so i put it away."

grr.

sunday confession

when i was little my dad
took my brother for a haircut.
he took him to the barber,
and my brother came home
with the shortest haircut possible.

after that my mom wouldn't let my dad
take my brother for a haircut anymore.
which is pretty much what my dad wanted.
clever.

when we were first married,
mm told me that i made the best
kool-aid ever.
he just couldn't mix it as good as me.
so i made it, because i was the best, after all.

which is pretty much what mm wanted.
clever.

last week i started going
to the grocery again after a long hiatus.
i bought tons of stuff.
but then we didn't have anything for dinner.
i didn't buy any meat.
only a couple of packages of waffles.
i forgot about meals.
but we have a lot of snacks.
and paper products.
and desserts.

but maybe, just maybe,
mm won't make me go back to that place!

which is pretty much what i wanted.
fingers crossed.

micromanage, much?

- are you sure you want to write in yellow marker?
- do you want me to draw some lines so the title is a little straighter?
- does that blue "a" look backwards?
- are you sure you don't want the push pins to match the beads?
- really? a purple membrane?

breathe.
just let it go.

sunday confession

i have been shopping for clothes.
this means i wander around a store,
get depressed,
and look at shoes instead.

we are going on vacation soon.
normally, when we go somewhere,
there is a washing machine.
so i pack for 4-5 days,
do laundry,
and i'm set for the rest of the week.

not this time.
there is no washing machine.
and i don't have enough clothes to last a week!
how depressing is that?

i should be on a shopping spree.
but instead i wander around and wonder,
"what do i like?"
i don't even know where to start.
i need a fashion intervention.
i have no style.

and i can't bear to wear my t-shirts anymore.
you know the ones.

once upon a time

once upon a time,
a girl got an iphone.
it was a big step up
from her tracfone.

she used up the new battery,
in less than a day.

her husband said,
"you know, you can only recharge
the battery 400 times,
after that it loses some
capacity."

she heard,
"blah, blah, recharge the battery 400 times, blah, blah."

because 400 times is like once a day - for over a year!
and that is a lot of angry birds.

the end.
